Video Capture Computer

Hi folks,

I found the video capture computer at a blue screen of death (BSOD) on Sunday morning. As a workaround, we captured the service straight to a DVD, which I will use to create the sermon and audio files for the website.

We are ordering a new video capture computer, and will get the old computer fixed, so that we will have two working video editing workstations upstairs. Once fixed, the old computer will replace the even older HP computer now being used to print DVD discs.

In the interim, we may need to capture directly to DVD again, or I may bring in my computer from home, until we get a replacement solution.

Additionally, we will be installing Adobe CS4 on the new video capture computer!

  1. Do we need to think about an external hard drive for more storage and backup of important events, headers, tails, etc?

  2. FYI. I just bought a 1.5 TB drive from newegg for $110 for VBS. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136592 Hard to beat. Kip, you have more experience with external storage than me. Do you find it fast enough?

I wonder if this machine may be called on to edit 720P or 1080i in the next few years. If so, it may benefit from external raid 5 via SAS. Still, unless you want to make blueray DVD's I guess capturing 480i makes the most sense, doesn't it?

  3. Hi guys,

We already own a couple external hard drives for storage of video projects. We do not save service captures long term, just on the DVD's, so an internal second drive will do us nicely. It will allow us to potentially keep an entire year's captures, instead of only two or three weeks. This might be helpful solely in creating the end of year highlights video which we do for the February Congregational meeting.

The 1.5TB drive is a sweet price for an awesome drive, I use WD Caviar Blacks all the time. I will ask Jay to order it instead of the 1TB drive I had spec'd.

No, we are probably not going to be producing Blu-Rays quite yet, but I have been thinking about it for my own personal recreation.

  4. I have picked up the broken computer, and will drop it off at Byrne's PC garage tomorrow for diagnosis.

  5. We have ordered a Dell Optiplex 780 workstation, with Windows 7 64-bit OS. It will have 8GB RAM and a 1.5TB second hard drive. It will not arrive for a couple weeks, so this weekend we will more than likely use my personal computer to capture the service. I will be setting this up to test tomorrow.
